Photos Below: A wonderful cubby makeover by Lisa (Black Sheep Prims) She paid
$ 3.00 for it at city mission thrift store. She started by sanding down the edges, painted base coat of black, then barn red, and stenciled "Shaker Seeds" on the front. The final process was a coat of Walnut Gel Stain.

Char purchased this breadbox for
$ 3.00 at the local Thrift Shoppe!
Techniques Char used:

1. First, I always either lightly sand my wooden piece if it has been previously finished OR I use a product called "Liquid Sander".

This product you just apply with a cotton rag, rub it all over in small circles, let dry about 10-20 minutes, then go right to painting.
2. Next, I took and painted my whole piece with black craft paint. I like to use this as a "basecoat" for all my pieces. That way when you sand off some of the topcoat, this tends to show thru.

3. After that is nice and dry, I paint on my topcoat. This can be any color you choose. Let dry completely.

4. Now, time for the distressing! I always use my hand held palm sander for this method! Much easier on the arms & a whole lot faster!!! Now, sand away! Remember, you will want to get all the edges and around things like knobs a little more than other places because this is where something would "naturally" wear away at.

5. Wipe away dust with a slightly damp cloth and let dry a minute.

6. Now take "Dark Walnut" mimwax stain and apply this all over your piece. I like this color for it's aged look that it gives. This doesn't have to sit on the piece long, but it can if you want it to darken it alot more.

7. Take and old rag and wipe away the stain now! That's it!!!

8. On certain pieces I like to finish it off with a Matte Finishing Spray,
but not necessary. The stain acts like a sealer too!

Here is a great makeover from Anne
(Humble Hearts & Homes)
She had an old shelf with a mirror. She took the mirror out, then painted it. Instead of getting out the sander to "age it" she dry brushed some black paint on with a dry old tooth brush, and applied antiquing gel after it dried. She then used heavy gauge crafters wire and nailed it to the inside of the shelf. Instant bowl rack!!
